Breed Ledger vs AKC Marketplace: Listing or Your Own Brand?

By Dusty Mumphrey5 min read937 words

I built Breed Ledger, so weight what I say accordingly. AKC Marketplace is run by the American Kennel Club, it carries real brand trust, and many honest breeders get buyers through it. This is not a takedown. It is a comparison between two different shapes of business, written for breeders deciding which one fits their program in 2026. No affiliate links, no sponsorship.

The short version

AKC Marketplace is a listing marketplace. Breed Ledger is a direct kennel site. Picking between them is less a feature comparison and more a decision about how you want buyers to find you, and whether your program is even eligible for the AKC listing in the first place.

AKC Marketplace advertises AKC-registrable litters to a large, high-intent buyer audience. If you breed AKC-registered purebreds and you want that pipeline, it is doing real distribution work for you. Breed Ledger is the lighter-cost path when you would rather buyers land on your own site, on your own domain, with your own brand, and when you breed animals AKC does not register.

You can also do both. Many dog breeders run Breed Ledger as their direct home base and use AKC Marketplace as one traffic source among several. Treat them as complementary if that fits.

What AKC Marketplace actually is

AKC Marketplace is the American Kennel Club's platform for advertising puppies to buyers. Breeders create a profile, upload photos, and list available puppies from AKC-registrable litters. Buyers browse, filter by breed and location, and inquire. The AKC advertises the marketplace as reaching over 1.4 million potential buyers a year, and it offers buyer pre-screening and an enhanced kennel profile on the paid tiers.

The pitch is trust and reach. The AKC name reassures buyers, and the traffic is buyers you did not have to source yourself. The constraint is eligibility: the listing is for AKC-registrable litters, so if you breed reptiles, cats, livestock, exotics, or dogs outside the AKC system, this is not a channel that is open to you.

The cost, plainly

As verified on 2026-07-17, AKC Marketplace advertising runs $12 a month (plus a one-time $25 sign-up fee) for breeders with one or two litters a year, $119 a year for unlimited advertising aimed at breeders with three or more litters, or $45 for a single 90-day litter listing. Breeders of Merit get 90 days of free advertising. There is no per-sale commission on the advertising product itself, which is a real point in its favor over commission marketplaces.

Breed Ledger is free for your first 10 animals and $29 a month on the paid plan, with no listing gate and no species restriction. Different shape, different math.

Where AKC Marketplace wins

The AKC brand and the buyer traffic are the whole point, and both are real. Over a million potential buyers a year is distribution you would spend years and real money building on your own. If you breed AKC-registrable purebreds and you want qualified buyers without running your own marketing, AKC Marketplace earns its fee. The buyer pre-screening and the AKC name do work that a brand-new independent site cannot do on day one.

Where Breed Ledger wins

Breed Ledger is your own front door. Buyers land on your domain, under your brand, on a site that updates itself when you mark an animal available or announce a litter. Nothing gates you: there is no registration eligibility check, so reptile, cat, livestock, and exotic breeders are first-class, not locked out. You get 5-plus generation pedigrees, allele-based genetics, a waitlist with per-pup deposits, and a built-in directory that is its own buyer-discovery channel across every species.

Most importantly, the buyer relationship is yours. On a marketplace you are one listing among many; on your own site you are the destination.

Who should pick which

Pick AKC Marketplace if you breed AKC-registrable purebred dogs and you want the AKC's brand trust and buyer pipeline without building your own audience.

Pick Breed Ledger if you want your own branded site and buyer relationship, if you breed animals the AKC does not register, or if you want pedigree, genetics, and waitlist tooling in the same place buyers find you.

For a lot of purebred dog breeders the honest answer is both: AKC Marketplace as a traffic source, Breed Ledger as the home base every one of those buyers eventually lands on.
