Breed Ledger vs ReptiDex: Which One Do You Actually Need?

I built both. Here is the honest difference between ReptiDex, the husbandry and lineage app, and Breed Ledger, the breeder website platform. Most reptile breeders should run both.

Dusty Mumphrey

Founder, Breed Ledger. Senior Engineer. Breeder.

I built both ReptiDex and Breed Ledger. I am the worst possible person to write a neutral comparison. What I can do is tell you honestly why I built two products instead of one, and which one (or both) makes sense for your setup.

If you are a reptile breeder or keeper trying to decide between them, this should save you time.

The short version

ReptiDex is a husbandry and lineage app. You log feedings, weights, sheds, breedings, and pedigrees on your phone. It is built around the daily and weekly act of keeping reptiles healthy and tracking how your collection breeds together. iOS app live, web app live, Android in development.

Breed Ledger is a breeder website and business platform. Your animals, your pedigrees, your morph genetics, and your public-facing kennel site all live in one system. When you mark an animal as available, your site updates. When you announce a clutch, buyers see it on a real page they can share. Buyers find you through the breeder directory.

For most working reptile breeders, the answer is both. ReptiDex is for the collection in your reptile room. Breed Ledger is for the buyers in front of your storefront.

Why I built two products

I get this question often. Why not put husbandry tracking inside Breed Ledger? Why not put a public website inside ReptiDex?

The honest answer is that the two jobs are fundamentally different and trying to do both in one app produces mediocre results at both.

ReptiDex is what you reach for at 9 PM when you are doing rounds, weighing geckos, marking who shed, who got fed, who is gaining weight on schedule. It needs to be fast on a phone, work in low light in a reptile room, and not require a desk session.

Breed Ledger is what your buyer reaches for at 9 PM when they are scrolling for a crested gecko they want to bring home. It needs to look professional, render on every device, rank in Google search, show verified pedigrees, and convert browsing into inquiries.

Cramming both jobs into one product means compromising on one of them. ReptiDex stays focused on the keeper and the collection. Breed Ledger stays focused on the buyer and the storefront. The two talk to each other where it matters, and stay separate where it matters more.

When ReptiDex is enough

You can stop at ReptiDex if:

  • You are a keeper, not a breeder (you maintain a collection but do not sell animals)
  • You are a hobbyist breeder producing one or two clutches a year and selling through MorphMarket or social DMs
  • You do not want or need a public website
  • Your buyers find you through existing channels (your Instagram, MorphMarket listings, word of mouth)

For that case, ReptiDex's husbandry features, lineage tracking, and species care guides are the right tool. Pay the $4.99 a month for Pro if you outgrow the free 10-animal cap. You do not need anything else.

When you need Breed Ledger too

You need Breed Ledger added to ReptiDex if:

  • You are producing real volume (multiple species, multiple clutches per year)
  • You want buyers to find you through Google search rather than only through marketplaces
  • Your animals warrant a professional storefront with verified pedigrees
  • You want to be listed in a free breeder directory
  • You sell from your own website rather than only through MorphMarket
  • You want the lethal combination warnings and morph prediction depth that Breed Ledger's genetics engine provides

The combination is genuinely powerful. Use ReptiDex for daily husbandry on your phone. Use Breed Ledger for the public storefront, lineage that links across other breeders, and discovery.

When Breed Ledger alone is enough

You can run Breed Ledger without ReptiDex if:

  • You breed reptiles but you are not doing daily intensive husbandry tracking
  • You handle feeding and weights through a spreadsheet, a notebook, or another tool you already trust
  • Your priority is the public website, the buyer experience, and lineage
  • You also breed mammals or livestock alongside reptiles (ReptiDex is reptile and amphibian focused)

Breed Ledger has animal records and lineage. They are not as deep on the daily husbandry side as ReptiDex, but they cover the bases for breeders whose primary workflow lives elsewhere.

Pricing reality

ReptiDex

  • Free: up to 10 animals, basic weight tracking, 5 breeding pairs, 1 GB storage
  • Pro: $4.99/month or $49.99/year. Unlimited animals, weights, breeding pairs, 10 GB storage, data export, 3 collaborators
  • Premium: $9.99/month or $99.99/year. Everything in Pro, unlimited storage, unlimited collaborators, advanced analytics

Breed Ledger

  • Free: no time limit, no credit card, no animal cap
  • Paid breeder plans add custom domain, advanced analytics, and additional templates
  • Breed club and registry plans start at $49/month

If you run both, you are paying $5 to $10 a month for ReptiDex Pro or Premium plus whatever Breed Ledger tier fits your program. The combined cost is still under most all-in-one breeder platforms.

Will they integrate?

This is the most common question I get. Short answer: yes, eventually.

The integration roadmap calls for ReptiDex to sync animals, pedigrees, weights, and breeding records to Breed Ledger so you do not have to enter the same data twice. The current state is that you can export from ReptiDex and import to Breed Ledger manually. Native sync is in active development.

If you start with ReptiDex today and add Breed Ledger later, your data is portable. If you start with Breed Ledger and add ReptiDex later, the same is true. Neither product locks you in.

When neither one is right

ReptiDex and Breed Ledger are both reptile-aware. If you breed only dogs and want a polished dog-only buyer portal with deeply integrated invoicing, BreederBuddy may fit better. If you want the cheapest possible records option for mammals, BreederCloudPro is hard to beat. If you breed show animals exclusively and pedigree automation is your top priority, PowerBreeder is a real option.

I built Breed Ledger because none of those served reptile breeders well and because the multi-species breeder needed a single home. I built ReptiDex because the daily husbandry workflow needed its own mobile-first product. Both exist on purpose.

FAQ

Are they the same company?

Same founder. Both are products from Built By Dusty, a software studio I run that builds tools for animal breeders. Each product is run as its own thing with its own roadmap.

Why not just merge them?

Because the two jobs require different design constraints. Husbandry tracking needs a fast mobile app for use in the reptile room. A breeder website needs a professional desktop and mobile experience for buyers. Trying to combine them in one product produces a worse tool for both jobs.

Do I need ReptiDex if I have Breed Ledger?

Not strictly. Breed Ledger has animal records, weights, and lineage. ReptiDex goes deeper on daily husbandry, feeding logs, shed tracking, and species-specific care guides. If you want that depth on your phone, add ReptiDex. If your husbandry is already handled elsewhere, you can run Breed Ledger alone.

Do I need Breed Ledger if I have ReptiDex?

Not unless you want a public-facing website, buyer discovery through a directory, and verified cross-breeder pedigrees. ReptiDex is a private tracking app. Breed Ledger is a public-facing business platform. They solve different problems.

Is the data portable between them?

Yes. ReptiDex supports data export. Breed Ledger supports bulk import. The native sync between them is in active development.

Which one should I start with?

If you are still building your collection and learning, start with ReptiDex. If you are already producing clutches and want to sell from your own website, start with Breed Ledger. Most working breeders end up running both.

Bottom line

ReptiDex tracks your collection. Breed Ledger sells from it. They are not competitors. They are two halves of a reptile breeding operation.
