Founder, Breed Ledger. Senior Engineer. Breeder.

I have been in the dog world since I was five years old. I helped establish ABKC during the American Bully breed's founding years, showed under UKC, and earned group placements. I also have nine years of professional software engineering experience. I built Breed Ledger. Knowing that context should help you calibrate what I say below.

Kennel management software is not a glamorous topic. Most breeders find a system, stick with it until it breaks something important, and then look for alternatives. This guide is for breeders who are evaluating kennel management software options now, before they are stuck.

What kennel management software should actually do

The term gets used loosely. Some products that call themselves kennel management software are basically fancy spreadsheets. Others are full platforms that include websites, litter tracking, health records, genetics, and buyer management. The difference matters a lot when you are choosing.

A complete kennel management system should handle:

  • Animal records: Individual profiles with photos, health testing results, genetic status, weight history, and notes
  • Litter management: Pairing records, whelp dates, puppy tracking through placement
  • Health documentation: OFA evaluations, genetic panel results, vaccination records
  • Pedigrees: Multi-generation trees that update automatically when you add new animals
  • Buyer management: Waitlists, applications, hold status, placement records
  • Public website: What buyers see should come from your records, not a separate manual process

A few systems now handle most of these. Where they differ is depth, especially in genetics, cross-species support, and how tightly the public site stays connected to your actual records.

BreederBuddy in 2026

Best for: Dog breeders who want a polished all-in-one system for records, buyer management, and a synced website.

Price: 30-day free trial. Plans start at $14.99/month.

BreederBuddy is one of the most complete dog breeding platforms on the market right now. It handles animal profiles, litter tracking, health records, heat cycle monitoring, buyer applications, waitlists, invoicing, digital contracts, and payment collection. The interface is modern and well-designed. The mobile experience is solid.

The integrated website builder is a genuine strength. When you update a dog profile or mark a puppy as reserved in BreederBuddy, your public site updates automatically. That sync between records and website eliminates the double-entry problem that plagues breeders using separate systems. BreederBuddy also includes a buyer portal where clients can view contracts, invoices, and puppy details without you fielding the same questions repeatedly.

Where BreederBuddy falls short is depth on the genetics side. There is no allele-based trait tracking, no morph prediction engine, and limited COI analysis. If your breeding decisions depend on understanding multi-generational genetic inheritance, you will hit the ceiling. The platform is also dog-specific. If you breed reptiles, cats, horses, or any other species alongside dogs, BreederBuddy does not cover you.

Verdict: The strongest all-in-one option for dog breeders who want records and a synced website in one system. Limited if you need deep genetics or breed multiple species.

BreederCloudPro in 2026

Best for: Multi-species breeders who want affordable cloud-based records across dogs, cats, horses, goats, rabbits, and sheep.

Price: Free version available. Paid plans start at $4.99/month.

BreederCloudPro covers more species than most competitors: dogs, cats, horses, goats, rabbits, and sheep. The platform handles litter management, health records, heat cycle tracking, pedigree building (up to six generations), financial tracking, and buyer communication. The pedigree builder exports to PDF, which is useful for sharing with buyers or submitting to registries.

The price point is hard to beat. A free tier lets you evaluate the platform, and paid plans start under five dollars a month. For breeders managing a small to mid-sized program across one or more species, BreederCloudPro delivers a surprising amount of functionality for the price.

The limitations are on the presentation side. BreederCloudPro is primarily a records system. It does include a basic kennel website and gallery feature, but the public-facing output is not as polished as what BreederBuddy or Breed Ledger produce. Pedigrees are PDF exports, not live interactive pages you can share as URLs. If buyer-facing presentation matters to your program, you may still need a separate website.

Verdict: Best value in the category for multi-species breeders on a budget. Less polished on the public-facing side.

PowerBreeder in 2026

Best for: Show animal breeders who want automated pedigree assembly and litter management at a low price.

Price: Free tier available. Enhanced plan at $10/month. Professional plan at $20/month.

PowerBreeder is purpose-built for animal breeders and has been around since 2009. It handles animal profiles, automated pedigree creation, litter announcements, and a public-facing website, all from one system. The platform supports dogs, cats, cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, and other show animals.

The automated pedigree system is PowerBreeder's standout feature. When a dog earns a new title, you update it once and every pedigree that references that animal updates automatically. For show breeders managing programs with deep lineage records, that saves real time.

Where PowerBreeder falls short: the design flexibility on the website side is limited compared to modern builders. There is no genetics engine beyond basic pedigree assembly. No allele tracking, no morph prediction, no trait inheritance modeling. And while the species support is broad, the platform is oriented around show animal workflows. Reptile and exotic species breeders are not served here.

Verdict: Affordable and reliable for show animal breeders. Gets harder to justify if you need genetics depth or modern design flexibility.

Breed Ledger in 2026

Best for: Breeders who want records, pedigrees, genetics, and a public website from the same data, across any species.

Price: Free to start. No credit card required.

I built Breed Ledger, so you should weight my opinion accordingly. But the design philosophy is genuinely different from the other options on this list.

Like BreederBuddy, Breed Ledger syncs your records to your public site. When you add an animal, it becomes a profile on your website. When you mark a puppy as reserved, your listing updates. There is no manual step between your records and your public site. Where Breed Ledger differs is in three areas.

First, the genetics engine. Breed Ledger supports full allele-based morph tracking for reptile species and trait tracking for dogs and other species. When you pair two animals, it can predict possible outcomes based on their confirmed genotype. For crested gecko breeders, the allele database is fully seeded. Ball python, leopard gecko, and other popular species are seeded or in the pipeline. No other kennel management platform offers this level of genetics tooling.

Second, species coverage. Breed Ledger is not dog-specific, cat-specific, or show-animal-specific. The same platform handles dogs, reptiles, cats, horses, and livestock. If you breed crested geckos and French Bulldogs, you do not need two separate systems.

Third, cross-kennel pedigree linking. When an animal in your program has a sire or dam from another breeder's Breed Ledger account, the pedigree links across accounts with an approval workflow. Lineage is verified, not assumed. This matters for breed clubs and registries where pedigree accuracy is non-negotiable.

What Breed Ledger is still building: payment processing and deposit management are not yet built in. For now you will handle deposits through your existing process. The template selection is smaller than a general-purpose website builder.

Verdict: The deepest option for breeders who care about genetics, multi-species support, or verified cross-kennel pedigrees. Still maturing on the payments side.

Other Options Worth Knowing About

The Breeder's Standard has been around since 1991 and offers the most rigorous COI analysis and pedigree tooling in the category. It is desktop software with no cloud sync, no mobile app, and no website generation. If your primary need is deep pedigree analysis and you are comfortable with a desktop workflow, it is unmatched in that narrow lane.

BreederZOO is a cross-platform database with strong document management and PDF generation. It handles pedigrees, contracts, and health records. No integrated website builder. Worth evaluating if document management is your top priority.

How to Choose the Right Kennel Management Software

The right choice depends on what problem is costing you the most time right now.

Choose BreederBuddy if you breed dogs, you want a modern interface, and you need records and a synced website in one system without managing separate tools.

Choose BreederCloudPro if you breed multiple species, you want to keep costs under $5/month, and you are comfortable building your public site separately.

Choose PowerBreeder if you breed show animals, pedigree automation is your top priority, and you want to stay under $20/month.

Choose Breed Ledger if you want genetics-driven breeding tools, you breed multiple species, or you need cross-kennel pedigree verification. If your breeding decisions go deeper than which dog to pair with which dog and into allele inheritance and trait prediction, Breed Ledger is the only platform built for that.

Why Your Kennel Software Should Talk to Buyers

Every platform on this list costs you time in one form or another. Separate records and website systems cost you double-entry. Limited platforms cost you flexibility as your program grows. Spreadsheet backends cost you your sanity.

The question worth asking before you choose is: what does this software do to the buyer experience?

A buyer looking at your program wants to see current animals, verified pedigrees, health testing results, and some evidence you know what you are doing. If they have to send a DM to get that information, you are losing buyers to whoever has it organized on a website.

Kennel management software that only talks to you, not to buyers, is solving half the problem.

Breed Ledger is free to start. If you want to see what an integrated breeder website and kennel management system looks like in practice, you can have a live preview of your program in about five minutes.
