Dusty Mumphrey
Founder, Breed Ledger. Senior Engineer. Breeder.
I breed crested geckos and have been in the dog world since I was five years old. I also have nine years of professional software engineering experience building platforms for healthcare, fintech, and government. I built Breed Ledger, so you should know that upfront. But I have used or evaluated every platform on this list, and I will tell you honestly where each one wins and where each one falls short. You can decide what matters most for your program.

What a breeder website actually needs to do
Before comparing breeder website builders, it helps to agree on what the job is. A breeder website is not just a digital business card. It needs to:
- Show your current and upcoming animals with accurate status (available, reserved, sold)
- Display pedigrees in a way buyers can actually read and verify
- Handle inquiry routing so you are not buried in DMs
- Work on mobile because most buyers browse on their phones
- Get found on Google without you spending money on ads
Most generic website builders check one or two of these boxes. Breeder-specific platforms vary a lot in how well they handle the rest.
Breed Ledger handles all five of these out of the box. You can try it free and see for yourself.
Wix for Breeders in 2026
Best for: Breeders who want complete design control and already know Wix.
Price: Free tier with Wix branding. Paid plans start at $17/month (billed annually).
Wix is the most flexible general-purpose website builder available. If you are willing to invest real time into building it out, you can make a professional-looking breeder site. The editor is drag-and-drop, there are hundreds of templates, and the platform is stable and well-supported.
The problems start when you try to run an actual breeding program on it. There is no native concept of an animal with a pedigree. If you want to show a three-generation pedigree, you are either uploading an image of a spreadsheet or building a custom layout by hand. Every time an animal is reserved or sold, you are editing that page manually. Litter tracking means building a new page from scratch for each litter.
Wix works if you are the kind of breeder who updates your website twice a year. If you are active and producing multiple litters, the manual overhead compounds fast.
Verdict: Good website builder. Not a breeder website builder.
Squarespace for Breeders in 2026
Best for: Breeders who want a clean, polished look and are comfortable paying for design quality.
Price: From $16/month (Basic plan, billed annually). The Core plan at $23/month adds marketing tools and code access.
Squarespace has a better design aesthetic than Wix out of the box. The templates look more professional with less customization. If visual brand matters to you, Squarespace will get you there faster.
The same limitations apply as Wix, plus Squarespace is less flexible. You cannot easily build custom layouts without fighting the editor. The e-commerce tools are decent but not built for selling live animals. Squarespace does not know what a deposit hold is, what a puppy waitlist is, or what a pedigree is.
Verdict: Looks good. Same operational problems as Wix.
PowerBreeder for Breeders in 2026
Best for: Show animal breeders who need automated pedigree creation and litter management at a low price point.
Price: Free tier available. Enhanced plan at $10/month. Professional plan at $20/month.
PowerBreeder is purpose-built for animal breeders. It understands pedigrees, animal profiles, litter announcements, and breeding records in a way that Wix and Squarespace fundamentally do not. The platform supports dogs, cats, cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, and other show animals. If you breed show animals and want a managed workflow for tracking your program, PowerBreeder is a legitimate and affordable option.
Where it falls short: the platform is built around show animal workflows and does not support reptiles or other exotic species. If you breed crested geckos, ball pythons, bearded dragons, or any reptile, PowerBreeder is not built for you. The design flexibility is limited compared to a general-purpose builder. And the platform does not include genetics tools beyond basic pedigree assembly. There is no allele tracking, no morph prediction, and no trait inheritance modeling.
PowerBreeder also does not have a built-in breeder directory, so your listing does not help buyers find you on Google. You are still responsible for driving traffic to your site.
Verdict: Solid for show animal breeders who want purpose-built tools at a budget price. Limited for reptile breeders and breeders who need genetics tracking.
Breed Ledger for Breeders in 2026
Best for: Breeders across any species who want a professional site, animal management, pedigrees, and genetics in one platform. Also breed clubs and registries.
Price: Free to start. Breed club and registry plans available.
I built Breed Ledger, so read this section with that in mind. I will tell you what it does and what it does not do yet.
Breed Ledger is built on the idea that a breeder website and a breeder management platform should be the same product, not two tools you duct-tape together. When you sign up, you pick a template, add your animals, and have a live professional site. Your animal profiles automatically become your website listings. Your pedigrees are built from actual relationships between animals in the system, not uploaded images.
The genetics engine is the part I am most proud of. It supports full allele-based morph tracking for reptile species and trait tracking for dogs and other species. When you pair two animals, it can predict possible outcomes based on their confirmed genotype. For crested gecko breeders, the allele database is fully seeded. Ball python, leopard gecko, and other popular species are seeded or in the pipeline.
What Breed Ledger does not do yet: deposit and payment processing is not built in. You will still take deposits through Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle while we build that out. The template selection is smaller than Wix.
Verdict: The most complete breeder-specific platform available. Best fit if you breed multiple species, care about pedigrees and genetics, or want your website and records in one place.
Honorable Mentions
BetterBreeder is a WordPress-based platform built specifically for AKC show dog breeders. Pricing runs roughly $500 to $2,000 per year depending on the plan. It handles pedigree display, health testing records, litter announcements, and SEO structured data. If you breed AKC-registered dogs and want a polished site without managing your own WordPress hosting, BetterBreeder is worth evaluating. It does not support reptiles, cats, or other species.
Breedpost is a newer breeder CMS with built-in pedigree charts, litter management, buyer application forms, and a block-based page builder. It supports multiple species and focuses on mobile-responsive design. Worth watching as the platform matures.
How to Choose the Right Breeder Website Builder
Here is the honest breakdown:
Choose Wix or Squarespace if you want maximum design control, you are comfortable with the manual overhead, and you have a simple operation that does not change much.
Choose PowerBreeder if you breed show animals (dogs, cats, horses, livestock), you want purpose-built pedigree and litter tools, and you want to keep costs under $20/month.
Choose Breed Ledger if you want your website, animal records, pedigrees, and genetics in one place. If you breed reptiles, cats, livestock, or multiple species, Breed Ledger is built for you. If you want your breeder profile to be discoverable without running ads, the platform is designed to help you get found.
Why Structured Data Matters for Breeder Listings
Generic website builders do not have structured data for animals. That means Google does not know your golden retriever puppy listing is a product or that your crested gecko morph page represents a specific animal for sale. It just sees text on a page. Breed Ledger generates schema.org structured data for your animal listings automatically, which helps them surface in search results in ways that a Wix or Squarespace page cannot.
This is not a magic SEO button. But it is a difference that compounds over time as your catalog grows. If you are producing multiple litters per year across several pairings, structured data means every animal page has a better chance of being understood and ranked correctly by search engines.
